Artist Statement

My name is Aaron Hu. I’m primarily a director of photography but I also act as a documentary filmmaker from New Jersey.

My work as a documentary filmmaker expresses themes of relationships of all forms, whether that be with children and their parents or other forms of relationships. However for me, relationships are not just defined as a connection between two people, but connections people have with ideas, or objects as well. I hope that my work as a documentary filmmaker aims to help people connect with others in difficult relationships.

The way I like to tell these documentary stories is to use a very loose style of handheld cinematography that enhances the intimate nature of the relationships in the film. However, I am not limited to this style of cinematography. I would define my style of cinematography to encompass all forms of visual styles that fits with the director’s vision. I’ve always been very interested in cinematography when it comes to filmmaking and how visual storytelling is used in films. Some of my favorite scenes in film utilize no dialogue and only visuals to convey themes and emotions.  I always find it extremely important to listen to others in a conversation, rather than enforce your own creative ideas without a second thought. After all, listening is 50% of a conversation. With my cinematography, I want to capture the pure essence of the director I am working with, and work with them to find a look that they believe in. I am a firm believer in the idea that there is no good or bad cinematography, there is simply only cinematography that is right or wrong for the story being told.
